Other Public Institutions with Collective Bargaining

Collective bargaining is common in higher education, particularly in public higher education. According to the National Center for the Study of Collective Bargaining in Higher Education’s (NCSCBHE) Directory of Faculty Contracts and Bargaining Agents in Institutions of Higher Education, as of January 2006 over 318,000 faculty were represented by a collective bargaining agent. These academic staff and faculty were organized into 575 distinct bargaining units, distributed across 491 institution or systems of higher education with 1,125 campuses. In the past ten years, over 62,000 new faculty - an increase of over 24% - have become represented by collective bargaining agents.
Some of the institutions that collectively bargain are the University of Minnesota-Duluth and UM-Crookston; the seven four-year colleges and 30 two-year colleges of the Minnesota State College and Universities System; Eastern, Northern, Northeastern, and Western Illinois, along with SIU-Carbondale, Chicago State, and Governor’s State University; Michigan’s Central, Eastern, Northern, Western, Ferris, Oakland, and Wayne State Universities; the University of Northern Iowa; the 19 campuses of the City University of New York and 29 campuses of the State University of New York; the 20 campuses of the California State University system; the nine campuses of the Florida State University system; the ten campuses of the University of Hawaii system; Rutgers University; the University of Vermont; the University of Connecticut; the University of New Mexico; and the University of Alaska.
